Presenter: Kari Proft, RSI Faculty Liaison

As the end of the semester and grading is upon us, it's the perfect time to learn useful tips and tools to increase the impact and efficiency of your feedback to students. In this panel discussion, listen to your faculty peers share practical strategies for how they promote instructor-initiated interaction, which is an essential characteristic of regular and substantive interaction (RSI).

The Department of Education defines substantive interaction as engaging students in teaching, learning, and assessment. Interactions should be substantive in nature, focus on course content, and contribute to students’ progress towards course, program and college learning objectives. Particularly, the content in this session will help instructors engage in assessing and providing feedback on student's coursework, providing information and responding to questions about course content, and facilitating group discussions on the content of the course.

We invite you to join us to learn best practice strategies for interacting in online classes that you can incorporate now or next semester. Time for questions and answers will be allotted for each best practice.

1. Definition of DoE (Department of Education) substantive interaction

2. Canvas instructor tools

3. Interactive student tool: Padlet

4. Social annotation tool: Perusall

Learning Outcomes:

1. Gain understanding of the DoE requirements for substantive interaction 2. Know how to leverage Canvas tools immediately in providing substantive student feedback 3. Learn 2 web-based tools that can be integrated into Canvas to promote student to student interactions and instructor-initiated communication

How are your online and blended students performing in your classes? Are any of them struggling to understand course content, complete assignments or engage with you and their peers? Now that we are nearing the midterm point of the semester, it is a good time to address if any of your students may need some instructor outreach.

Per the Department of Education, in addition to engaging in regular and substantive interaction (RSI) with students in courses classified as distance education, instructors are also responsible for monitoring their students' academic engagement and success as well as proactively and promptly engaging in substantive interaction with students as needed based on such monitoring.

In this session, you will learn more about this federal distance education guidance and have an opportunity to see demonstrations of useful tools in Canvas that you can leverage to monitor student progress and engage with your students to help support their success.

1. Overview of the updated Department of Education guidelines for Distance Education

2. Canvas tools to monitor online student academic engagement and success

3. Canvas tools to promote instructor-to-student engagement and interaction

By participating in this session, faculty will know the available tools in Canvas to monitor online student academic engagement and success as well as the available Canvas tools that can be leveraged to engage and interact with students. Faculty will also better understand their role and responsibilities in adhering to the updated Department of Education guidelines for Distance Education.
