CFSP 32 - STEAM Craft: Hooked on Crochet - Level 1 (Grades 6-8)

Course Description

Crochet is not just for grandmas! Crochet exercises all elements of STEAM in a practical hands-on way. It requires and allows for planning, hypothesis, testing, reevaluating, revising and execution.
Science
Science is involved in the dying of fibers as well as production of yarns being made from new fibers such as milk and plants. Different breeds of sheep, rabbits and other animals and plants produce yarn with different characteristics.
Technology
An abundance of free patterns is offered online. Many support groups and design programs exist through technology platforms.
Engineering
The lay of the fabric and the fit of the item created involve engineering principles to join pieces to create the look and feel intended by the designer.
Art
Crochet involves choices of fibers, colors, shapes, needle and yarn sizing and embellishments. Like any craft, crochet has its own unique language, abbreviations, charting and markings so that patterns can be produced and items duplicated.
Math
As with all creative endeavors, designing and execution involve a great deal of math to determine the required yardage, the number of stitchers per inch, needle size necessary to produce the proper gauge (stitches per inch). These measurements affect the look, feel and design of the finished item.
