Course Description

Get a head start on high school chemistry with an introduction to the basics, such as types of matter and the periodic chart. Build confidence and competency in the essential mathematics skills necessary to thrive in a high school honors and college prep chemistry course. The main focus will be on basic math concepts used in chemistry: rounding, rules, scientific notation, significant figures, factor label method (dimensional analysis), percent calculations (finding % difference, % error and % change) and graphing basics. We will also learn about density and Gas Laws formulas, the periodic table, moles, molar mass and Avogadro's Number. Students should bring a scientific calculator, paper or notebook and writing utensil to each class.

This course is offered only for seventh and eighth grade students who have qualified for the Fast-Paced Gifted Program.
